Preparing for Birth

A big part of my practice is working with women during pregnancy. I cannot tell you how many times I have people say to me “I didn’t know you could go to the chiropractor when you are pregnant,” or ” I wish I would have known about chiropractic when I was pregnant.”

It is my goal that everyone knows the importance of chiropractic during pregnancy. Not only can women go to the chiropractor when they are pregnant, they NEED to go. It offers so many benefits to the mother and the baby. It is my passion to help women have the best possible pregnancy, labor and delivery.

I see so many women who do not properly prepare for their birth and it is leading to many unnecessary interventions. To any woman out there who is going to have children, this is the message I want you to hear: prepare for your birth as you would for your dream wedding. Take time to research and figure out what you want and what you don’t want. Do not leave it up to the protocols that are established to favor the hospital staff.

Here are a few ways you can prepare.
1) Hire a doula. I would compare this to hiring a wedding coordinator. It is someone who knows a lot about the birthing process and what to expect. The doula can help you prepare properly.
2) Research birth care providers. You are hiring this person to help you bring your baby into the world. Make sure it is someone you like. It is okay to change birth providers. Also, research all the providers of the group because there is a chance one of them will be the doctor delivering. Find out what their c-section rate is. Just how you select the minister who marries you, you get to select your birth care provider and you want it to be someone you like and feel a personal connection with.
3) Take care of your body with proper nutrition, exercise and chiropractic care. You are going to be doing a lot of work to get that baby out of you, so you need to train for it. Every woman I know does a lot to prepare their body for their wedding, do the same for your birth.
4) Have a birth plan. Your doula is a great person to help you with this. Most weddings have a details agenda of exactly what is going to happen on the special day, so should your child’s birthday.
5) Take a detailed and informative birthing class. This is usually found outside of the hospital.

Think Prepare Exercise image Sozo blog 5.5.2016Your baby’s birth day is such a monumental day and the more you can do to prepare for it, the better your outcome with be. Unfortunately, I know of several moms who have had a traumatic delivery and they walk away from the birth of their child with physical and emotional scars. I hope to see this happen less and less. I hope to see more moms who say “the day my child was born was the best experience of my life.”

Another note, when your child is born, hold your child for as long as possible. The newborn exam can be performed while you are holding your baby. He or she does not need to be separated from you, unless there is a medical emergency. The weight and length of the baby can be taken later. It is not going to change in the first few minutes of life. The first few minutes are precious and so important for both the mom and baby. Don’t let anyone take that away from you.

Here’s to healthy moms and healthy babies.
Live life to the fullest.

My Road to Becoming a Chiropractor

Sozo Chiropractic logo

Sponsored by Sozo Chiropractic

I thought I would share a little bit about myself for this blog. I know my bio is posted on the website but I wanted to go a little deeper.

Sometimes when people find out I am a third generation chiropractor they will ask if I felt pressured into becoming a chiropractor. My response to that is always “No”. I was raised with a chiropractic philosophy and lifestyle. When we got sick, we would get an adjustment and then allow the body to heal. The health challenges we faced were addressed naturally. It wasn’t until I was a freshman in college than I grasped how special and unique this approach was. While in undergrad, I started to work at my dad’s office part-time, just to help me get through college. I was an education major at the time, planning to be an elementary teacher. I felt no pressure to become a chiropractor. However, that job changed my career path. Read more…

While working there, I saw so many miracles happen. I realized how much I loved chiropractic- the philosophy and results. I realized I wanted this for my kids the way I had it when I was growing up. I realized that so many people don’t know about chiropractic and how amazing it is. I realized I needed to do this. It was part of MY purpose.

Fast forward 12 years. I am now married, have 4 kids and have been in practice for 6 years. I have been able to provide chiropractic care to my husband. One of the first things I did with my kids after their birth was adjust them. Such an amazing moment as a chiropractor and mom. I have also had several opportunities to help babies and other kids. Part of the dream has been realized, but there is more to it.

There are still so many kids who are not getting the benefit of regular chiropractic care. My goal is for this to become normal for everyone. I would love to see babies get a chiropractic exam before they leave the hospital, like they get their hearing checked before they leave. I believe we would see a dramatic change in the health of our kids.

When I have gone to register my kids for school, they require a dental exam as part of the enrollment process. My goal is that someday a chiropractic exam will be a part of this as well. I am all about having clean teeth, but really? They can get a new set a teeth. A child’s spine will be the same one they have at 86. It needs to be taken care of early so they are not immobile and debilitated by pain at 55. I think it is great that more and more parents are taking their kids early to the dentist but I hope they will have the same approach and concern for their children’s spine.

I feel blessed to be able to help my kids achieve a healthy life style and love to help other families on this journey as well.

At Sozo we are “changing the health of our community one family at a time.”

Developing A New Normal
Sponsored by Sozo Chiropractic

It is always interesting to me what people define as “normal”. It is definitely a relative word and each person has their own perspective of what normal means in their lives.

One of my favorite things is to help people realize a new normal in their health. When doing an initial evaluation with a new patient, I will ask lots of questions of his or her current symptoms and health concerns. Many times people will refer to their pain or headaches as normal. From my perspective, headaches are not normal, back pain is not normal, leg pain is not normal, fatigue is not normal. The reason it is viewed as normal is because it has gone on for so long. There is a point when the pain or symptoms start to feel normal. People accept the pain and don’t know they can live a life free from that. Read more…

Are You Normal imageChiropractic care is such a great, safe and natural way to realize and embrace a new normal. You can live free from headaches and pain, and be full of life and energy. Depending on the situation it may be a longer process to get there, but it starts with realizing there is a possibility for a better normal.

My goal is to help people live life at their full potential. Chiropractic care is a big part of this. However, it is not the only part. Often there are lifestyle changes that need to accompany the chiropractic care to achieve the goal. To realize a new normal, you have to be willing to make the changes necessary to get there.

If you or someone you know has accepted a life full of discomfort and pain as the norm, I challenge you to start or recommend chiropractic care. From there you can incorporate the lifestyle changes necessary to find a new normal.

Live life to the fullest!

What Parents Should Know About Earaches

2 out of 3 children will get at least one earache before their third birthday

Sponsored by
Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare – All Saints

It’s a common childhood complaint: an earache. Ear pain often heralds an ear infection — the leading reason children visit the doctor. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently updated its guidelines for managing ear infections. Arm yourself with the latest about this frequent child illness.

The ear has three parts: the outer, middle, and inner ear. As you might suspect, the outer ear is everything you can see, plus the ear canal. The middle portion involves hearing; the inner part plays a vital role in balance.

Most ear infections attack the middle ear, specifically, the eustachian tube. It’s a structure that links the middle ear to the back of the nose. It drains fluid from the ear. When bacteria from an illness infect the tube, it swells up and blocks fluid inside. The result: a buildup of pain-producing pressure. Children often develop an ear infection after a cold, the flu, or another respiratory ailment because the eustachian tube becomes swollen causing fluids to accumulate in the middle ear. This fluid becomes a breeding ground for bacteria or viruses and if infected, will often trigger swelling and painful pressure. While an often painful condition, earaches rarely pose a significant health threat and are quite common among kids.

Key signs of earache in small children include pain and pressure, fever, temporary hearing problems, ‘stuffiness’ in the head, and may include some drainage from the ear. Among infants, look for signs of loss of appetite, irritability and crying. Playing or pulling on their ears as a standalone symptom is not a reliable source as kids will play with their ears for other reasons.

Wheaton 6762739 Doctor Ear Exam (2)To diagnose an ear infection, your child’s doctor will use an otoscope — an instrument with a lighted end. He or she will look at the ear drum for bulging or redness. The doctor may also test for fluid in the middle ear.

According to the latest AAP guidelines, treatment may include antibiotics. But your child’s doctor may first suggest waiting two to three days to see if symptoms improve. Ear infections can go away by themselves. Plus, waiting can protect your child from possible medication side effects. It can also limit antibiotic resistance — when bacteria become immune to the healing power of antibiotics.

Your child’s doctor may immediately recommend antibiotics if your child is younger than 6 months or has a severe ear infection. Medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help ease pain. Never give your child aspirin, as it has been linked to Reye’s syndrome. Also, applying a warm (not hot) heating pad to the painful ear can offer some relief.

If your child has reoccurring ear infections — more than four in a year — surgery may be best. Ear tubes implanted in the eardrum can help drain fluid from the middle ear.

The AAP counsels against using complementary and alternative medicine treatments for ear infections. These include plants like Echinacea and chamomile. Research on the effectiveness of these approaches is very limited.

Experts say that 75% of children will suffer an ear infection before age 3. To lower your child’s odds, follow these steps:

  • Keep your child up-to-date on vaccines. A yearly flu shot and the pneumococcal vaccine can prevent bacteria responsible for ear infections.
  • Avoid tobacco smoke. Children exposed to it tend to have more ear infections.
  • Put down the bottle. Studies have shown that breastfeeding for at least the first 6 months of a child’s life can lower his or her future chances for ear infections.
  • Teach your child proper hand washing. It can help stop the spread of germs.

Seasonal Fun…Delivered!

Expecting?
Sponsored by Sozo Chiropractic

Having been through several pregnancies myself, I can personally attest to the many benefits of chiropractic care during pregnancy.  I honestly don’t know how women go through pregnancy without chiropractic, and no women should have to. Let me explain how chiropractic helps women during pregnancy:

In addition to the noticeable changes your pregnancy will cause your body, pregnancy can also cause subtle changes in the musculoskeletal system; changes a Chiropractor is able to detect and correct.  The position of your growing baby will cause your center of gravity to shift and your spine will naturally alter itself to accommodate this change. As a result, you may experience low back and pelvic pain. Read more…

SOZOCHIRO pregnantThe increase in hormones during pregnancy can also cause muscles, ligaments, cartilage and even bones to “soften” and become more pliable. Pelvic bones may even become displaced or fixated. Since your hips will need to spread to accommodate the delivery of your baby, fixated pelvic bones can lead to complications during delivery.  It’s especially important during pregnancy for nerve impulses to flow from your brain to all the parts of your body. A slightly out-of-place vertebra can create nerve irritation, which can and will interfere with your body’s communication system. By using special or modified techniques during your pregnancy, a Family Wellness Chiropractor can restore the function of your nervous system, improving your overall wellness and increasing your comfort during your pregnancy and delivery. In fact, research has proven that:

  • 84% of pregnant women treated by Chiropractic care received profound relief from low back pain
  • Women who received Chiropractic care had nearly a 25% reduction in the average labor time verses the “generally accepted average labor time” (With women who had given birth in the past, the number rose to 33%)
  • Postpartum pain was relieved in 90 of 120 moms that received regular Chiropractic care

During your pregnancy, a Doctor of Chiropractic can do the following:

  1. Correct vertebral misalignment and relieve nerve interference with gentle adjustments.
  2. Help ensure that pelvic bones are properly aligned, contributing to a shorter and easier delivery.
  3. Re-establish the natural position and mobility of the joints.
  4. Provide freedom from interference of normal nerve energy.
  5. Decrease the likelihood of your fetus being in the wrong position during the last trimester

More than just a treatment for low back pain, many mothers have come to recognize the vital role that Chiropractic care plays in a healthy pregnancy, reporting back to their Chiropractors that regular spinal adjustments helped them feel healthier during their pregnancy, decreased morning sickness, facilitated shorter labor and delivery times, and increased an overall sense of well-being.

Well, Hello FALL!

5 Lifestyle Mistakes that
Keep Your Family from Wellness
Sponsored by Sozo Chiropractic

From a wholistic point of view, one that understands your mind/body/spirit are interconnected and regulated by innate intelligence, you can pick any place to start changing your life for the better at any moment and that action will impact your whole being.  Read more…

Mistake #5 – Lacking a Positive Attitude

Sozo 5Taking yourself to task for having a crummy attitude can be like trying to find the beginning of a circle or ring. But because you are an interconnected being that “bad” attitude could be originating with other common obstacles to wellness. However, while they may take more time and effort to achieve, changing your mental state through a practice of gratitude can be done with immediate and measurable effects on the rest of your being. The social, physical, and psychological benefits of gratitude have been well documented and research suggests these benefits are readily available because gratitude:

  • Boosts feelings of optimism, joy, pleasure, enthusiasm, and other positive emotions
  • Reduces anxiety and depression
  • Strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, reduces symptoms of illness, and makes us less bothered by aches and pains
  • Encourages us to exercise more and take better care of our health.
  • Helps us sleep better: get more hours of sleep each night, spend less time awake before falling asleep, and feel more refreshed upon awakening
  • Has been found to help people recover from traumatic events, including Vietnam War veterans with PTSD
  • Makes us feel closer and more committed to friends and romantic partners

Mistake #4 – Living Bodies Need Living Foods

Seems logical, right? A living seed placed in the soil has all of the nutrients and life force to grow Sozo 4generations of plants for years to come. But take that same seed and slather it in pesticides and herbicides, jam some foreign animal DNA into its gene make-up, irradiate it, ship it an average of 1500 miles to the grocery store where it will sit on a shelf before being shoved in a nutrient killing microwave… well, you get the idea. Most of our food supply, while “edible” and filling to our stomachs, is dead on arrival.

What are living, whole foods? Food that is in its natural state, preferably organic, local, and seasonal. Most of these foods are found around the perimeter of your grocery store. “Many people feel that if they can’t eat their favorite junk foods, they are being deprived. In reality, the sooner you switch your eating habits, the sooner you’ll enjoy increased energy, normalized weight, a better mood and improved health overall. Knowing this, many initially succeed at implementing an improved diet, but then fall back into old habits… and therefore, the ‘old’ body,” says Joseph Mercola, MD. “To avoid this, I recommend you make the changes to your diet gradually, starting with making one meal a day raw, then increasing from there.”

Mistake #3 – Not Getting Enough Sleep

For decades, studies have related a lack of sleep to health problems and cognitive impairment but there Sozo 3is still little attention paid to sleep as a part of health. “One of the failings in the field of sleep research over the past 40 or 50 years is that we went in search of the one single Holy Grail function of sleep. We now realize that sleep is necessary for a whole constellation of different functions for both the brain and the body,” says Matt Walker, an associate professor of psychology at UC Berkeley and Principal Investigator at the Sleep and Neuroimaging Laboratory, in an interview with the Greater Good Science Center. Additionally, a study of mice published in 2013 in the magazine Science, showed an unrealized function of sleep: to wash away trash from the brain. “The trash, including pieces of proteins that cause Alzheimer’s disease, piles up while the rodents are awake. Sleep opens spigots that bathe the brain in fluids and wash away the potentially toxic buildup,” writes Tina Hesman Saey, in Science News. “The discovery may finally reveal why sleep seems mandatory for every animal. It may also shed new light on the causes of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.”

Mistake #2 – Lacking Fitness or Physical Activity

Sozo 2The tagline that describes society’s pandemic of inactivity was introduced in early 2013 when the Harvard Business Review published “Sitting is the Smoking of Our Generation,” by Nilofer Merchant. “The common denominator in the modern workday is our tush,” wrote Merchant, a corporate director at a NASDAQ traded firm and a former founder and CEO of Rubicon. “As we work, we sit more than we do anything else.” Add in the time we sit at home, and we’re averaging 9.3 hours of sit time every day.”  American lifestyle – of working at a desk all day – is mostly to blame for Americans finding themselves lethally sedentary.  But so is the American past time of television watching. In 2012, an Australian study found that for each additional hour of television a person sat and watched per day, the risk of dying rose by 11 percent, according to The New York Times.

Mistake #1 – Lacking a Healthy Nervous System

Sozo 1Just as the seed mentioned above carries all of the information it needs to grow into its full potential in the right conditions, every cell in our bodies carries the capacity for full health and wellness – with the right conditions. It is the human nervous system that is responsible for delivering over 100,000 messages per second to each cell, organ, bone, muscle and blood vessel. These messages are delivered at 325 miles per hour across 45 miles of nerves. What happens when the vital life giving and regulating messages of the nervous system are blocked in subtle or overt ways? Chiropractic care addresses these subtle or overt obstacles, called subluxations, to your nervous system’s optimal functioning through adjustments to your spine, which houses and protects the superhighway of messaging to the body, the spinal cord. Subluxations can be caused by stresses that overwhelm the body’s ability to function properly:  physical stresses, like a car accident, a fall, improper posture; or emotional stresses; or chemical stresses from the use of prescription or illicit drugs, inadequate nutrition or environmental toxins.

Freeing your body from subluxations, the interference of the nervous system, allows the full expression of the nervous system and its ability to regulate and move your body toward optimal wellness. As long as these nervous system communications are open and flowing at 325 miles per hour down 45 miles of superhighway, the human body largely has the innate intelligence to maintain health.
